A Breath of French Air continued
I first heard of the Larkins from a tv series called The Darling Buds of May that screened here years ago – Pa, the rascal, wheeler dealer what charms everyone. Ma, mother to all them all, brightly clothed and unflappable and their numerous children along with their new son-in-law Charley.
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It’s a small book that you could get through quickly and it’s a ‘fish out of water’ adventure when the Larkins decide to go to France for a holiday.
Full of little observations about cultural differences (“What, no Yorkshire pudding?”), the Larkin family become the centre of their ramshackle hotel’s life, charming the proprietor and staff. Pa manages to do some trading with the local fisherman, and in his own way, creates new French words up. Ma relaxes on the beach.
A soft gentle family adventure.
